There are various ways to add texture and alter the surface of stone with the
most popular processes shown below. If you require a finish not featured here
or need to match a previous supply, we will almost certainly be able to produce
so please call to discuss your requirements.
textured stone
A brushed finish is achieved with the use of wire wheels and brushes to work the face of the stone.
This process grinds and wears away the softer parts of the surface with the result being a smooth slightly
undulating surface that gives a worn, soft look to the stone. A brushed finish is also used in conjunction
with more aggressive surface treatments to soften their feel and appearance.
Brushed Finish
textured stone
Acid treatment is a chemical finish that will give the stone surface a very rough, almost sandpaper like
feel and is an excellent choice for external paving, swimming pool decking and pool copings where
additional traction is required. When used in conjunction with a brushed finish, the result is an altogether
softer surface and therefore also suitable for internal use.
Acid Washed
textured stone
With this finish, the stone is blasted with a high-pressure spray of sand, grit, or air whilst moving across
the surface culminating in a fine, textured look. This treatment is perfect for wall cladding blocks and
some external usage such as pool copings or steps. For floor tiles the stone would also be brushed to
varying degrees depending upon whether being used inside or externally.
Sandblasted
textured stone
A flamed finish is achieved by applying intense heat to a slab by breaking down the surface and thereby
roughening the face of the stone. Perfect for a non slip external finish in it’s raw state but if applying
increasing amounts of brushing, the surface becomes softer whilst retaining the texture and becomes
an excellent choice for inside the home as well.
Flamed Finish
textured stone
Bush hammering is the most aggressive treatment that can be applied to the stone by using a masonry
tool similar to a meat tenderiser which breaks up the surface to create a natural rough texture. This finish
is generally used for wall cladding or external tiles where extreme grip is required. However, brushing
can be applied to soften the surface if preferred.
Bush Hammered
textured stone
A batch of our Antiqued finish stone will be tumbled and brushed to varying degrees, whilst some will
additionally be given an acid, flamed, sandblasted or hammered treatment. Furthermore, to complete
the look we use a blend of several complementary stones to add tonal variation. The result is a truly
unique floor with the aged look of centuries old tiles.

Checkerboard
Checkered floors date back to Egyptian times and classically consists of a dark and light pairing of equal
sized tiles. More ‘recently’ smaller tile designs were used widely in Victorian hallways and entrances and
are a feature of American style diners where larger tiles are generally used.
As an alternative, any two stones can be selected to create a floor that is overall more harmonious and
individual to you. Please visit our tile patterns page or call to discuss.
other items
Cabochon Floor
A Cabochon floor is synonymous with entrance hallways where large light coloured tiles are paired with
small dark cabochons. As with checkerboard tiles, a more harmonious, closer tonal match can be used
or if desired, the same stone could be utilised for both the tile and the inset to give a subtle, understated
look. Please visit our tile patterns page or call to discuss.
other items
Shaped Tiles
Whilst squares and rectangles are by far the most prevalent shaped tiles for flooring, hexagonal tiles
offer an interesting alternative in bathrooms, smaller kitchens or hallways. Hexagons also work well in
smaller sized wall tiles - as do other shapes such as chevrons, triangles or diamonds.
Please visit our tile patterns page or call to discuss.
other items
Block Flooring
Our stone block flooring can be used to create a variety of herringbone as well as linear patterns which
work particularly well in bathrooms or smaller areas. The standard flooring is 10cm x 30cm although
longer lengths can be supplied for linear designs. For wall cladding, the sizes can be scaled down and
supplied at a thinner gauge. Please visit our tile patterns page or call to discuss.

Mixed width tiles are laid as a ‘random’ brick bond design and generally
comprise of 60cm and 40cm wide tiles. 75% of the mix is made up of wider tiles and the narrow width rows should be distributed randomly.

Offset Paving
Linear designs include the clean lines of a single size tile laid as a brick bond or grid design, to the
traditional ‘free length’ which is ideally suited to installations with varying sized rooms - we also supply
mixed width to bring another dimension to the free length design. There are also ‘multi tile’ designs
that fall between the linear and opus romano patterns.
offset paving
The offset paving pattern is a large format design which repeats every 1.42m2 and each repeat of the pattern consists of 2 tiles @ 60 x 90cm
and 1 tile @ 60 x 60cm.

the hard facts
Granite is an igneous rock which forms deep in the Earth when molten rock cools, crystallizes and finally solidifies. Granite is classified as an intrusive rock as it is formed beneath the Earth’s surface whilst other igneous rocks such as Basalt, Obsidian and Pumice are classed as extrusive as they are formed from lava flows above ground. Igneous rocks make up over 75% of the earths crust.
The word granite can be traced back to the Latin word ‘granum’ meaning grain and has been used as a building material since the ancient Egyptians and notably can be found in the huge red granite sarcophagus at the Great Pyramid of Giza.
Granite has been favoured as a construction material for millenia due to it’s strength, resiliance and pleasing speckled aesthetic generally featuring red, pink, green and brown as well as grey and white constituents depending upon the mineral composition.
Although domestically granite has been the stone of choice for kitchen worktops due to its durability, it is becoming increasingly popular for polished floor tiles in the home or with a flamed finish for external applications where more traction is required for terraces, steps or around swimming pools
Limestone is a sedimentary rock made up from layers of accumulated organic matter deposited beneath shallow seas millions of years ago. This turned to stone under extreme pressure over time and fossils and impurities provide the patterns and colour variations within the stone.
Marble is a metamorphic rock that was originally limestone which crystallised when subjected to immense heat and pressure. This heat destroyed any fossil and sediments present in the original rock, and pressure created the cracks that are evident in many marbles, whilst the colour of the marble is contingent upon the mineral and chemical content. However, scientific definitions of limestone and marble differ from the way they are categorised commercially.
Limestone and marble are both limerocks which is a historic term for stone that is roasted to produce lime which is a basic ingredient in cement and many other industrial processes. From an industrial viewpoint, the important constituent of limerock is calcite and stone suitable for industry was called limestone.
The limerock that was put to decorative or structural use was called marble which derives from the ancient Greek marmaron - to shine.
Because limestone is (generally) less dense than marble and lacks the visual impact, historically, it has been used for columns, cladding and external flooring. It may be honed or polished smooth, but is in the main part limited to a matte finish. Marble is preferred for floors, entrances, internal columns and steps. The full beauty of marble is seen when light penetrates into the stone, giving a glowing translucency.
Much of our stone is sourced in the Middle East and is denser than the majority of limestone found globally. The ‘Ha scale’ measures wear from foot traffic: Turkish and European limestones range from 18 to 28Ha. Granite starts at 38Ha. Our limestone starts from 26Ha and Golden Cream is rated 42Ha. In fact, Golden Cream has been installed as flooring for it’s durability at Cairo International Airport with it’s 15 million annual passengers..
This effectively means that all of our stones are dense enough to be supplied with a polished surface whilst also being extremely hard wearing if supplied with a honed and tumbled finish.
This may muddy the waters somewhat and it may just be easier to describe your polished floor as marble whilst your tumbled tiles can be called limestone. Alternatively, you could just say ‘your beautiful stone floor!’
installation advice
General
Always ensure that you have ordered enough tiles to complete the project as we cannot guarantee a colour match from a future batch. Being natural stone, the colour may vary so always mix the tiles before laying.
The surface on which the tiles are to be laid must be level, dry, free of dust and clean and always allow a minimum of 5 weeks for a new screed to dry. In damp or cold conditions, this will take longer. Suspended timber floors should be rigid and capable of taking the additional loading.
If there is spring in the floor, fix sheets of 18mm plywood directly to the existing floor to eradicate any movement. The plywood should be coated with PVA adhesive before tiling.
Existing tile floors such as quarry or ceramic can be tiled over provided they are sound. Any soft flooring such as cork, vinyl or woodblock will need to be removed and the subfloor thoroughly cleaned. Any damp or uneveness in the sub floor will need to be addressed.
Underfloor heating should be commissioned and switched off prior to commencing tiling. Always use flexible adhesive and grout and allow expansion gaps around the perimeter and in doorways.
Underfloor heating should not be switched on for at least two weeks after completion and then slowly build up to required temperature over a week. When fixing tiles over 1cm thick to walls, care should be taken to ensure the surface is sound and the wall of sufficient strength to take the tile.
Preparation
When the tiles have been laid, the floor level will be raised by the depth of the tiles plus the adhesive bed (generally 4-5mm). Always plan for this at the beginning of the job and allow for doors and adjoining room floor levels, where a wooden or lateral stone threshold plate may be required to achieve a uniform or acceptable level.
Take time to carefully plan the area or room to be tiled. Most computers will have a program capable of drawing a scaled room/area plan which you can tile onscreen. It is important to put in the preparation as any errors or changes of mind can be difficult and expensive to rectify once underway.
The starting point for your tiling is dependent upon the area to be tiled and the pattern being used.
When ready to start laying, open all the crates and take tiles from each so any colour variation is randomised across the area. Lay them out to get a feel for the size joint which does depend upon the look you wish to achieve, but would generally be between 3mm for smaller tiles and up to 8mm for larger format tiles.
Check that the tiles are clean and most importantly - dry.
If laying an Opus Romano pattern, lay out a complete pattern and adjust the joints to achieve the desired result. The joints may vary in width when using mixed sizes of tile.
It may be difficult to identify the face from the underside of some tiles so ensure that the tiler is familiar with the stone before starting work.
Fixing
A flexible adhesive is recommended for fixing your tiles. If laying a pattern such as Opus Romano, it is advisable to use an adhesive with a longer setting time to allow for repositioning of the tiles if required.
Using a notched trowel, spread the adhesive to a thickness of around 5mm to cover your first square metre. Spread a thin layer of adhesive across the reverse of the tile and push the tile into position with a twisting motion. Repeat with the next tile and lay, allowing for the preferred joint width.
Check the tiles are true with a spirit level and adjust if required. Try to avoid getting adhesive on the front face of the tile and remove any surplus adhesive quickly with a damp sponge.
Once you have completed your first square metre, repeat the process until you have laid all the whole tiles.
Regularly check the level and ensure that tramlines are straight.
You can now make the cuts to the tiles to fill in around the perimeter. A diamond cutter or an angle grinder can be used to cut the tiles.
If using an angle grinder, mark a line on the tile and cut along it to around 2/3rds of the depth of the tile whereupon the tile can then be snapped.
With regard to sealing the tiles, it is suggested that an initial seal coat be applied prior to tiling or ‘straight from the box’. The first seal coat is applied prior to grouting and the second coat should cover the tiles and the grout.
Before sealing, the stone face must be completely dry and free of dust or adhesive. Apply the first sealer coat as per product instructions and ensure that the sealer soaks in to the stone.
Do not flood the surface of the tile as the excess will not soak in and will harden on the surface.
Keep traffic to a minimum for a couple of days to allow the sealant to fully oxidise.
Grouting
Before grouting, the tile adhesive must have cured, refer to the adhesive specification for drying times. When working in cold or damp conditions, the grout will take longer to set than when conditions are warm and dry.
Grouting is the process of filling the joints between tiles and completing the floor surface, holding the tiles in position and ultimately giving the floor strength.
There are various colours of grout available as well as pigments or dyes to create custom colours.
All the joints should be clean, dry and free of debris and excess adhesive. Mix the grout and be aware that most grouts go off quite quickly so you should work fast but with care. Push the grout down into the joints to eradicate air pockets until the joints are full. The more compacted the grout, the harder it will set.
There are tools available to compact and smooth the surface of the grout. The bowl of a teaspoon or dessert spoon, depending upon the joint width makes an effective tool to run along the grout line.
Ensure you have a ready supply of clean water and a damp sponge and cloth to regularly clean any grout off the face of the tiles before it has the chance to set.
Once the floor has been finished and the grout is completely dry, the floor should be cleaned and thoroughly dry before applying the second coat of sealant.
